Mobile phones have become an important part of everyone’s life. It seems like we have been used to using them. Where earlier it was just a 4-inch rectangular box that aided connectivity between people, today it is like a mini gadget that has the potential to do all.

Whether you want to order food, buy groceries, sell products, talk, connect, everything can be done. Much of these are done via an app powered by the Android platform. Looking back at the first android version and the ones that are used today, the industry has come a long way. In fact, it’s been more than a decade since the first android version popped into the mobile industry.

In case you aren’t aware of the Android timeline and wish to know more about its history, this article is right for you.

Here, we will walk down the different versions of android and uncover it’s history.

October 2003

Years before Apple rolled out its first iPhone and the iOS, four developers namely Rich Miner, Chris White, Nick Sears, and Andy Rubin planned and plotted to create Android that would install on cameras and connect wirelessly with desktop. This would then be adjoined to a data center to store images on the cloud.

This gave birth to Android Inc in Palo Alto, California. Though, the team had no idea that on the journey of creating OS for cameras, they would end up creating OS for mobile devices. The fact that it was a time when digital cameras were declining in popularity. So, the team thought to keep the software the same but change the target platform from cameras to mobile devices.

2005

This year was more like a table turner as Android was acquired by Google. All four developers continued to work over Android OS. The company sought that they could offer the OS to other services and earn money.

2007

Google was still working on its Android platform that one day Apple announced the launch of its first iPhone. This was a major breakthrough as they were actively taking the market share. To deal with this, Google in late November, the same year leaked his plans about Android. The company also entered into something we call as Open Handset Alliance where the major contributors were HTC, Motorola, along with other chip manufacturing companies.

In November 2007, Google released the first beta version of the OS and was meant for the developers to test and try the same.

2008

Within a year, in Sept. 2008, Google launched the very first Android smartphone, the T-Mobile G1, or HTC Dream. The device was of standard size but failed in a lot of aspects.

  • No headphone jack
  • Design was distracting
  • Bad reviews

All in all, the device was a total failure but not the OS sitting inside. There were some pretty good features like Google Maps, HTML browser, YouTube, all of which used Android. Also, the play store depicting other Android applications was a good start for the OS.

Since then, the OS has been revised and modified to come with more and more interesting features. Though Android has been in the trend of keeping the names as that of a cupcake or dessert, the first Android released did not have any name. It was simply Android 1.0.

Even the one that followed the above, Android 1.1 wasn’t given a name publicly. Internally, it was deemed as Petit Four, a French dessert. Only after the launch of Android 1.5, was a name given publicly, Cupcakes. Though not much is known about the ideology behind the name, yet when Android 4.4, KitKat entered the market, Google stated that these devices make our lives sweet and hence, the name.

Android Logo

Many of us find this extremely fascinating, that green-colored robot looks brilliant when we switch on our devices. The entire credit goes to Irina Blok, the inquisitive mind behind the same. While she had her own imagination, Google directed her to create a design that would resemble a robot. We all know how beautifully has she justified the same, right?

Android 10

The next version is due the last quarter of 2020 which would have the dark mode features and also be a plus in terms of security. The developer version has been released and soon we would see the 11th version of Android roll out in the industry.
